His perspective
A cycle tracker – for men, too?
Not as absurd as it sounds.
Andreas Held on pink apps, a Beer theme and THE DAY
I want to understand my wife’s cycle, at least roughly. What phase is she in right now? When is her next period likely to start? And when could THE DAY come around again? More on that later.
My phone is full of the usual guy stuff. One app stands out: it’s completely pink.
When I open it, I’m greeted by a bouquet of flowers and the question “How are you feeling today?” Neither is really what I’m looking for when I just want to know where my wife is in her cycle.
That got me thinking: guys like me could use something simpler. Something that shows the cycle at a glance and looks more like my kind of thing.
It starts with the app icon. It shows the Egg-Advisor, a friendly purple advisor with tinted glasses and a hoodie on a black background. Egg-shaped, of course – which somehow makes him relatable to us guys, too. ;)
First, pick your style
If you try to tap straight on when you first open the app, the Egg-Advisor stops you for a moment: “Choose your style quickly!”
Dark and light are nothing new. In Egg-Tracker, they’re called EggClipse and EggSposure. But I think EVERY app should have a Beer theme, too. So Egg-Tracker has one! And if you like things a little rosier, there’s Rosé Sunset.

“I swear!”
Next up is the Egg-Lawyer. Here you explicitly confirm that you’re either tracking your own data or that your partner has agreed. That matters to us – this is sensitive health data, after all. But you confirm it with “I swear!” – just like in court.
For me, making serious topics a little easier to approach with humor is part of what Egg-Tracker is about. By the way, the data itself stays on the phone. Nothing is sent anywhere automatically.
THE DAY
THE DAY is something special for my wife and me, and one of the main reasons Egg-Tracker exists in the first place.
Things are usually pretty harmonious at home. Still, every now and then there would be one or two days when everything suddenly felt more tense. Strikingly often, just before her period. Once we noticed the pattern, it became much easier to deal with.
And that goes for BOTH of us.
It was never about blaming anyone. Knowing about it made both of us more relaxed. You take some things less personally, talk about them sooner and handle difficult days together a little better. That’s exactly where THE DAY came from.
You can choose whether to enable THE DAY when setting up the app. Several women I spoke to thought THE DAY was a pretty bold idea. And of course, not every woman has days like that.
By the way, Egg-Tracker’s very first tagline was: “An app with the potential to save marriages.” Of course, that wasn’t entirely serious. But the idea behind it is still the same today: a little more understanding for each other can make a surprisingly big difference in everyday life.
The cycle ribbon
Once you’ve survived onboarding, you get to the real heart of Egg-Tracker: the cycle ribbon. It shows the cycle as a continuous path and makes it clear at a glance which phase you’re in and what’s coming next.
The biggest number on a day card isn’t the date but the cycle day. There’s a simple reason for that: if, say, you keep getting headaches around day 13, you’ll notice it much more easily in the cycle ribbon than in a monthly calendar. You spot patterns like that faster and can prepare for them better.
If you prefer the classic view, you can switch to the monthly calendar or the cycle clock at any time.
Talking about it
In conversations about the app, I noticed that many people find menstruation a very intimate topic and would rather not talk about it. I can understand that. Still, I think it’s important for couples to be able to talk about it openly.
Part of that is knowing a little about it. That’s why, in the EggCademy on our website, we try to explain the cycle phases a bit differently: in short lessons, with a pinch of humor and the sources right there.
If Egg-Tracker improves nothing but communication and mutual understanding, it has already done its job.
What’s next
We still have plenty of plans for Egg-Tracker. And we’re interested in other users’ ideas and suggestions, too.
If you have suggestions, feel free to send them by email or post them on the feedback board on our website.
And if it’s up to me, this will grow into a little Egg-Tracker universe over time. Egg-Timer – a combination of a chess clock and an egg timer – is already an interesting next step in that direction.
Andreas Held develops Egg-Tracker with his family under the name Tyam Productions, short for “Team You And Me”: teacher meets software developer, with two kids right in the middle.
Egg-Tracker is not a medical device and is not suitable for contraception.
